Artist Statement

Born on the border between matter and energy, from the interaction of fire with metal, my people define themselves in the light of intuitions, of the spark that generates expressive volumetric structures. They bear my mark as well as that of the one who looks at them.

Sorin Purcaru

Sorin Purcaru is one of the most active, dynamic and creative artists in Romania. With an important number of personal and group exhibitions, the artist has distinguished himself by the consistency and consistency of artistic projects, projects that propose reading sculptural art from a contemporary perspective, focusing on innovation, addressing the changes and openings imposed by globalization and international communication. cultural in a special key.

The sculptor proposes unique configurations, anthropo or zoomorphized, with graceful arches resulting from the contrast between the created shape and the ready made elements (bells, keys, locks) inserted, straight or twisted, balanced to create a directional tension. Interrogating and often persuasively confronting the postmodern theoretical baggage, Sorin Purcaru articulates answers in which it is not aesthetic stakes or excessive theorizing that prevails but the desire to offer an opening to the viewer about the profound changes that occur between societies, individuals. The artist manages to break the gravity of classical metal structures by selecting and inserting in each work fragments of objects often found accidentally which, in turn, evolve in the form of self-contained independent structures.

Each sculpture offers a visual experience that defies the physical properties of the materials in an aesthetic key of a special integrity. The contrast between the raw material, steel or bronze and the characters created, often dynamic that almost seem to take flight, the repetition of motifs in similar shapes in sculpture or contours in graphics, compatible surface textures, parallel planes, color affinities and discrete welding give coherence of each individual sculpture.

His characters insist on contrasting or molding themselves depending on the space where they are located, melting into a causal aesthetic amalgam. An allegory of freedom, of boundless openings, his work made of the synthesis of shapes and materials, in which light and surface texture play an important role, is sensual, multi-layered with a particular brain load, which gives the viewer a contemplative dimension, a window open to the pathos of the human condition in a society marked by uncertainty.

An inner force full of verve defines Sorin Purcaru's style, its forms are born from the complicity of matter with sublimated plastic reflection: ironic, intelligent, provocative, lascivious (affecting exaggerated modesty), industrial, each bears the personal mark of the artist, of searches each one reflects a truth about Sorin Purcaru in front of an authentic approach of self-identification and positioning in the heterogeneous mass of contemporary creations.
